Cambridge Library Local Studies in Floreat WA has an extensive collection of vintage City Beach images.
The Library provided these 1900s to mid-1960s City Beach images to the City Beach Surf Riders Club for use at their 50 Year Reunion held at the City of Perth SLSC in 2011. The Club is acknowledged to be the longest continuously running board riding club in Australia.
A steel shark spotting tower was added in 1945.
Beach patrols began following World War 2 when members from City of Perth SLSC would patrol the area from South City Beach to North City Beach (now Floreat). This led to the development of the North City Beach Surf Life Saving Club in 1947, which changed its name to Floreat in 1954.
The Floreat groyne was
built in 1958 to provide protection for swimmers at City Beach as well as
resolve some of the issues of erosion which had been experienced at City Beach.
The Tea Rooms were subsequently known as Bert’s, Fred’s, Eric’s, Colin’s & Mario’s as the proprietors changed from the 50’s through to the early 70’s. They were the unofficial headquarters of the City Beach Surfriders Club during that period.
During 1970/1971 the City of Perth undertook major works at City Beach including removing the foreshore road, demolishing wooden Tea Rooms and building new City of Perth Surf Clubrooms, kiosks and change rooms. Extensive beach car parking was also undertaken during this period.
In 1971, City Beach was the host of the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships.
City of Perth SLSC clubrooms were replaced in 2016 as part of a major program of works at City Beach which included the new clubrooms, three restaurants, amphitheatre, beachside promenade, shaded spaces for families and public art installations. State Heritage Report WA.
