WA pioneer surfer/photographer John “Budgie” Budge was snapping water shots of surfers’ decades before Go-Pro cameras became popular.
In 1957 Budgie put his Kodak Brownie box camera in a sock, then tied it around his neck before paddling out at Yallingup on his homemade balsa Malibu surfboard to capture these wonderful water shots of board riders at Yalls.
Budgie’s photos have been reproduced from Kodak transparencies which are over 60 years old.
Budgie’s photos have been published in the Surfing
Down South book published by Margaret River Press in 2014 and are on display at
the WA Surf Gallery, Aravina Estate Yallingup.
Budgie worked into his 70s at UWA Physics Dept. Now in his 80s he lives at Trigg, swims daily, rides a bike and is involved in environmental issues (fracking).
