Dave Macaulay was a successful campaigner of the Pro Surf Tour in the 80s and early 90s and finished No. 3 in the world twice. The former professional surfer is the current Masters World Champion.

In 1983 Dave was WA State Surfing Champion and West Australian Surfer-of-the Year.

He began his shaping career working at Murray Smith Surfboards in Churchlands in 1983.

In 1986 he won his first World Championship Tour Event defeating Mark Ochiluppo during a contest in Brazil where he was riding his own equipment, a board he’d shaped for himself.

In 1989 and 1993 Macaulay finished 3rd on the World Championship Tour and after 10 years of competing on the pro tour, called it quits to focus on his shaping.

Dave Macaulay still surfs every day. You can find him around his home breaks in Gracetown, regularly trying out new shapes, rockers and different aspects of board designs.

Dave Macaulay recounts the story of his Devo designed surfboard currently on display at the WA Surf Gallery

I used that board in the World Amateur titles in 1984, but not on the pro tour. I made it for Huntington Beach US so made it quite chunky to deal with the rumoured dead sections in that wave. The Devo spray is typical of that time. He used to come on a Friday and rip through a bunch of foam sprays, mostly funky freehand out-there stuff (i.e. not time consuming tape up jobs). People loved them and Murray Smith’s Churchlands surfboard factory was booming in those days, in part for Devo’s wild colourful sprays. Haven’t seen or heard from Devo since those days. The nose ended up mangled years down the track, so I sawed it clean off with the intention of making a coffee table from it but haven’t quite got there! Regards, Dave
