The evolution of State surfboard championships went something like this:
1964 First State surfboard championships were held Down
South at Yallingup over March LWE;
1965
First State winter surfboard championships were held in the Metro area at
Scarborough Beach; and then
1970s WASRA contest official Tony Harbison introduced
‘State contest rounds’ at different surf locations.
These State Winter championship photos/images were sourced from Scarborough surfer Colleen Burke’s photo album, unless stated otherwise.
The inaugural State winter surfboard championships were held at Scarborough in 1965.
The 1966 State winter surfboard championships were held at Scarborough in September. A small swell and unsettled conditions caused the conditions to change frequently.
See review of contest in SURFABOUT surf mag Vol. 3, No. 7.
The third State winter surfboard championships were held at Isolated surf break, Cottesloe in September 1967.
The contest name morphed from State winter surfboard championships to State spring surfboard titles by 1970.
