1968 Ian Cairns & Kevin Ager surfing Rocky Point WA

This short video features Ian Cairns age 16 from Southern Surfriders Club surfing with Kevin Ager from the Yallingup Board Club at Rocky Point WA in 1968. At the time Ian was WA State Junior Mens champion and Kevin State Spring Titles champion.

In the video Ian is riding a short Jacko single-fin. He rode the same board in the 1968 Nationals held in NSW and won the Duke Kahanamoku trophy for the most promising surfer at the event.

In 1969 both surfers represented the State at the first National Championships held in WA. Ian was State Junior champion again and Kevin won the Annual Trigg Point contest run by Scarborough Board Club.

In 1970 Ian represented Australia at the World Surfing Championships held in Victoria at Bells and Johanna beaches and went on to become a pro surfer and surf contest organizer/promoter on the world stage.

In the 70s Kevin shaped surfboards for Cordingley & Blaxell Surfboards and took up sailing/surfing Hobie-Cats. He went on to win the  Australian National Hobie-Cat 16ft Championships in 1977.

City Beach Surfriders Club members shot this video using the Club’s hand-held Super 8 camera.
