Memories from 10 years ago – 2013 North Point

The small coastal town of Gracetown in Cowaramup Bay was surveyed in 1961 and gazetted in 1963 along with its first land sale. Surfers were among the first residents to build a shack on its shores.

The town was named in honour of local Western Australian heroine Grace Bussell of the Bussell family – one of the first European settler families in the south west. In 1876, as a 16-year-old, she was involved with twenty five-year old Noongar man Sam Isaacs in the rescue of passengers and crew from the steamship SS Georgette at Calgardup Bay near Redgate. Grace and Sam were hailed as heroes, with Grace receiving a silver medal from the Royal Humane Society and a gold watch, and Sam receiving a bronze medal and 100 acres of land from the State Government. Cowaramup Bay’s point breaks and Huzzas in the bay have been surfed since the early 60s.

On its day North Point in Cowaramup Bay Gracetown is the premier right-hand reef/point break in Western Australia.

Reputations are made and broken in its heavy-duty waves.

Dunsborough landscape photographer Ian Wiese snapped these surfing photos at North Point 10 years ago in January 2013.

Enjoy!
