City Beach board riders used the City Beach Tea Rooms (located at the south end of former coastal road) as their unofficial headquarters and beach hang-out from the mid-fifties to the early-seventies when the building was demolished.
It was commonplace on weekends for local surfers to hang-out on the wooden steps in front of the Tea Rooms and wave to passengers on tourist buses using the scenic coast road.
In the mid-sixties some well-hung young grommets took this social activity to a new level. On busy Sunday afternoons they performed elephant impersonations and entertained passing bus passengers. Their routine was to stand out the front of the Tea Rooms waving to the passengers on tourist buses with the pockets of their shorts flared out like elephant ears and their “willy’s” swinging in the breeze from unzipped fly’s. It was comical to see the busload of smiling oldies casually waving to them, then seeing their looks change to awe (or admiration) as their heads swiveled around to gawk at the elephant routine as their bus drove slowly up the hill past the Tea Rooms.
This activity may not be politically correct these days but it sure was entertaining back in the sixties😊.
