Time warp back to surf city WA by Sean Murphy

WA journalist Sean Murphy from West Australian Newspapers reported on the inaugural Malibu pro am surf event held at Trigg Point WA on 8 December 1986.

The event featured former World Surfing Champion Robert ‘ Nat’ Young NSW (age 39), Australian Malibu Champion Stuart Entwistle NSW and WA’s triple World Cup (Hawaii) winner Ian ‘Kanga’ Cairns.

Local Trigg surfer Benton was voted the best young performer of the event. He won the Pepsi Invitational Amateur event, placed second in the Modern Malibu and third in the Classic Malibu event.

WA night Club owner Bill Oddy (age 40) was voted best performer over age 35.

Journalist Sean Murphy was born in Western Australia in 1961 and was brought up on Rottnest Island where his parents owned a pub. He began working in journalism in 1979 and worked for the Sunday Independent and The West Australian in Perth before moving to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Sean has been the ABC’s Sydney-based Landline reporter since 2002.

Sean’s brother Wayne Murphy is the author of Ian ‘Kanga’ Cairns Autobiography books 1 & 2.
