Margaret River resident Ken MacKenzie has won State Schoolboys (Churchlands High School), Open Men’s Surfing titles, represented WA in National surfing contests and won the Margaret River Surfing Classic. He was a member of Dolphins Board Riders Club in the early 70s and is a Life Member of the Margaret River Board Riders Club with his mother Mary.
Ken is also a skilled surf industry craftsman and produced quality Energy Surfboards for over 40 years.
Ken: “My partners in Energy Surfboards were my mum Mary and Keith ‘Woolly’ Hawken. We have been making surfboards since 13 March 1975. Our first board shop was in 63 Hector St Osborne Park.
In the 1980s, I also shaped and rode surfboards for StarSurfboards in Perth. I was a Star team rider with Mitch Thorson, Chris Fullston and Mike McAulliffe.“
1980 King of the Point contest
In 1980 the King of the Point contest at Trigg Point featured a winner-takes-all prize of $1,000, making it an exciting and memorable event. Ken competed in the contest and placed second to unseeded ‘goofy footer’ Mike McAuliffe. His second placing in the Trigg event followed a first in the State Titles and a second in the Margaret River Classic, placing him indisputably at the top of WA’s surfing tree in 1980.
Young ‘goofy footer’ Dave Macaulay (age 16) emerged victorious in the Junior division of the 1980 King of the Point contest.
Ken is now retired and lives on his rural property overlooking the beautiful Margaret River. He has Energy Surfboards and surf memorabilia on display at the WA Surf Gallery, Aravina Estate Yallingup.
