Former Scarborough surfer and talented underage footballer Fred Annesley mixed surfboard riding and SLSC activities throughout his contest surfing career…. a rare breed.

Fred was a lifeguard at Scarborough and Trigg in the 70s before moving down south and taking up lifeguard duties at Margaret River in the 80s.

In 1970 Fred (age 21) won the following events: –

  1. National Open Ironman event held by Surf Life Saving Australia SLSA in Orange Grove Vic. He competed for the Trigg Island Surf Life Saving Club, WA.
  2. Invitational event at the annual 6KY Trigg Point contest run by Scarborough Board Club. Results 1st Fred, 2nd Ian Cairns, 3rd Norm Bateman; and
  3. WA Surfer of the Year award conducted by WASRA.

In 2009 Surf Life Saving WA recognised Fred’s SLSA achievements and inducted him into the Sporting Hall of Fame at the Surf Life Saving WA Awards of Excellence.

Fred lives at Margaret River with his wife Beverley. Their son Rohan (renowned big wave charger), daughter Monique and grandchildren also live and surf in the region. Rohan’s kids competed in the 2024 Taj’s Small Fries contest.

Fred is employed as the Lifeguard/First Responder at the annual WSL Pro Surf event held at Margarets.

Fred celebrated his 75th birthday in Bali recently. He is still surfing and a member of the Gnarabup Swimmers group.
