In a later issue, Australian Long Boarding magazine revealed the mystery rider on the cover was WA resident Billy Gibson.

Former Scarborough surfer Bill Gibson has lived and surfed in the Southwest since 1974. He travels regularly and has an extensive knowledge of West Australian and East Coast surf breaks.

Now retired, Bill designs and restores surfboards and volunteers as a surf historian / curator at the WA Surf Gallery, Aravina Estate, Yallingup, WA.

Bill is a life member of the Margaret River Board Riders Club, Indian Ocean Longboard Club and Surfing WA.

Over the years, Bill has won State Titles and represented Western Australia many times. Now age 70, he continues to compete in club, state and national surfing events.

Bill is currently in Queensland with former Cottesloe Longboard Club president Martin ‘Richo’ Richardson to compete in the over-70 division of the 2026 Winter Longboard Classic at ‘The Bluff’ in Alexandra Headland over the June long weekend, 12–14 June.
