In 1991 Loz Smith introduced the Team Challenge concept to the annual Yallingup Malibu Classic in memory of WA surfing legend Terry Jacks.
Terry Jacks (46) formerly of City Beach, died in 1990 from blood poisoning he contracted while on a surfing trip in Indonesia.

In 1996 the contest name changed from the Terry Jacks Memorial Team Challenge to the Memorial Team Challenge in memory of Terry Jacks and Lindsay Thompson.
Margaret River surfing instructor Lindsay Thompson and eight other people died in a cliff collapse while watching a school surf carnival at Huzza’s surf break Gracetown in September 1996.
The 1996 framed Memorial Team Challenge trophy features a Super Tubes wave image by Kevin ‘Twiggy’ Sharland and photos of Terry Jacks and Lindsay Thompson. It was won by the Joy Boys team comprised of Rick Jakovich, Jack McCoy, Paul Thompson and Ken MacKenzie.

At the post contest celebrations held at Caves House, Rob Conneeley (Margaret River) presented a framed image of the original Joy Boys team (which included Lindsay Thompson) to Lindsay’s widow Helen and sons Adam, Neil and Paul. Loz Smith designed the framed Joy Boys team image and had it signed by all the surfers competing in the National Longboard titles.
