1980 Al Bean Surf Design

NZ surf photographer Ric ‘Charlie’ Chan was the Advertising Executive and Photographer for West Coast Surfer magazine in the 80s.

In 1980 Ric travelled down south for a photo shoot with surfboard shaper Al Bean. The boys put together an Al Bean Surf Design advertisement for West Coast Surfer mag.

Former Greirson Surfboards shaper Al Bean moved down south in 75. Al Bean (age 20) managed Surfside Store and the Yallingup Beach Caravan Park from 1977 to 79. Al learnt to cook and employed local girls to help at Surfside. He also did a bit of grass slashing at the Caravan Park, but not much else. He did do a lot of surfing!

Al Bean: The advertising image was shot on the bushland property I was renting at the time. It was Geoff Culmsee’s house on what is now Yungarra Drive Quedjinup (Dunsborough). Putting the boards in the bushes was Ric’s idea along with the captions for the advert. It was a lot of fun at the time and the advert was published in West Coast Surfer mag.
