Claire Bevilacqua joins Italian Surf Team

Yallingup pro surfer Claire Bevilacqua has years of competition experience in the World Surf League. She joined the World Championship Tour in 2004 and has won many competitions including the 2009 Pipeline Pro Hawaii.

Claire was born in Australia. Her mother lives in Perth West Australia but her father is Italian and lives in San Felice Circeo near Rome. She has lived in Italy and shares dual citizenship and the customs of both Australia and Italy.

This is Claire’s Italian Surf Team story….

In 2017 I was ranked #17 in the Women’s Qualifying Series ranking and was contacted by the Italian Surf Team to be part of their National Surf Team which is training to qualify for the 2020 Olympics. I have since completed formal health checks and tests for the Italian Team.

Earlier this year I injured my neck in a heavy wipeout at Injidup surf break in South West WA. Doctors told me I had a high risk of paralysis and were looking at operation options, but with meditation and yoga from SW locals Madhu Anderson and Katie Coryell I have recovered. I took no medication during my healing, I went vegan and ate as alkaline as possible cutting out alcohol, coffee, sugar etc.

After two months down time, I am slowly getting back into full training for future Pro Surfing events.

During the northern hemisphere summer, I stayed with my father in San Felice Circeo, a coastal town (‘the Yallingup of Rome’) perched on a hill below Mount Circeo. I continued my training which consisted of cycling, running, yoga, swimming and surfing wind swells on the local beach when the waves came a couple of times a week.

In September 2018 I competed with the Italian Team in the International Surfing Assoc ISA World Surfing Games held at Tahara in Japan.

This is part of my training to qualify for the Olympics in 2020 and was my first contest since my neck injury.

Earlier this week I competed in the women’s division of the WQS Mandurah Pro. I am looking forward to competing in the inaugural WQS Cape Naturaliste Pro 2018 to be held 18-21 October in my backyard at Yallingup.

I’m practicing and gaining confidence to complete in Olympic qualifiers and meet the cut for the Italians.
