Cordingley video – 1967-68 Smiths Beach, Rocky Point track and the Farm South West WA

In the 60s and early 70s Colin and Jennie Cordingley from Cordingley Surfboards in Hay Street Subiaco captured WA surfing footage on a handheld Super 8 movie camera.

A big thank you to Kevin Ager (former Cordingley shaper & champion Hobie Cat sailor) for identifying some of the surfers in this circa 1967-68 footage.

  1. Rob Birch and other Yallingup Board Club members surfing Smiths Beach with the Indicator Rock in the background.
  2. Colin Cordingley’s green ’66/67 model Corolla and Rob Birch’s pre ’66 Falcon on the track to Rocky Point. which would assume film recorded circa winter ’67, when also considering the boards and the broad fins on them which changed dramatically in ’68.
  3. Yallingup Board Club members surfing The Farm in Bunker Bay. Other than two surfers I can identify being Mark “Stretch” Waddell and Colin Cordingley. But judging by the boards I’d say ’67/’68 as I never knew of Mark before then, but I did after then and the shot shows his unmistakable style. Would like to identify the surfer who got the barrel, as the video shows how deep he was, too bad he fell after coming out.
