Home Grown Surfer: Bronte Macaulay

Gracetown surfer Bronte Macaulay is a second-generation pro surfer.

Her father, Dave Macaulay, was a renowned professional surfer during the 1980s and 1990s, achieving a world ranking of No. 3 on two occasions. Then in 2018 he became a World Surf League World Champion after securing first place in the men’s Masters division of the World Masters Championships in Azores.

Bronte began surfing in the Gracetown region at the age of nine under the guidance of her father, who also taught her older twin sisters Laura & Ellie-Marie. She launched her professional career in 2017 when she joined the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour and was coached by her dad on the world circuit.

The popular goofy footer excelled in some of the world’s most challenging waves, including her home breaks in the southwest and on the international stage. Her journey through the ranks was marked by major milestones including a string of top finishes in events like the Margaret River Pro and J-Bay Open.

Bronte called time on her competitive surfing career in 2024 and is currently finishing her primary school teaching degree with plans to graduate next year.
